Support Your Skin Barrier for Visible Redness
Sensitivity, Redness & Barrier Damage
Sensitive, reactive or redness-prone skin is more common than many people realise. Whether your skin has always been sensitive or has become sensitised over time, these concerns are often linked by one key factor: a compromised skin barrier.
Discover Our Sensitive & Redness Routine
What This Concern Looks Like
Sensitivity and barrier damage can present in a variety of ways. Common signs include:
-
Redness or flushing
-
Stinging, burning or itching
-
Tightness or discomfort after cleansing
-
Reactivity to products that previously caused no issues
-
Increased dryness, dehydration or rough texture
Redness-prone skin may also experience visible capillaries or uneven tone. For some people, these symptoms overlap with conditions such as rosacea, which requires medical assessment but often benefits from gentle, barrier-supportive skincare.
Why It Happens
At the core of sensitive and redness-prone skin is a weakened skin barrier. The barrier’s role is to retain moisture and protect against irritants, allergens and environmental stressors.
Factors that can contribute include:
-
Overuse or incorrect use of active ingredients
-
Harsh cleansing or excessive exfoliation
-
UV exposure and environmental stress
-
Hormonal changes, illness or stress
-
Underlying inflammatory skin conditions
When the barrier is compromised, water loss increases and irritants penetrate more easily, leading to inflammation, redness and sensitivity.
What Often Makes It Worse
Sensitive and redness-prone skin is often aggravated by well-intentioned but counterproductive habits, including:
-
Using too many active products at once
-
Chasing quick results instead of prioritising repair
-
Physical scrubs or aggressive exfoliation
-
Fragranced or alcohol-heavy products
-
Inconsistent routines
More is rarely better when it comes to compromised skin.
Routine Priorities
The goal with sensitive, red or barrier-damaged skin is repair first, actives second.
-
Cleanse: Choose a gentle, non-stripping cleanser that supports the barrier.
-
Exfoliate: Exfoliation should be minimal and carefully selected, or avoided entirely during flare-ups.
-
Treat: Focus on calming, anti-inflammatory and barrier-supportive ingredients rather than high-strength actives.
-
Hydrate: Replenish both water and lipids to restore comfort and resilience.
-
Protect: Daily sun protection is essential, as UV exposure worsens redness and barrier damage.
Hero Ingredients That Support This Concern
Niacinamide: supports barrier function and helps reduce visible redness.
Ceramides: reinforce the skin’s lipid barrier.
Panthenol (Vitamin B5): supports skin repair and hydration.
Zinc: helps calm inflammation and support compromised skin.
Allantoin: soothes irritation and protects the skin.

Overuse of actives
